Los Angeles, CA – The Current Report announces that retired Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Alfred “Al” Labrada has joined the publication as a contributor, bringing more than three decades of frontline law enforcement and executive leadership experience to the independent investigative outlet.
Founded by investigative journalist Cece Woods, The Current Report was created to expose corruption, challenge entrenched power structures, and restore credibility to media through rigorous independent reporting. Labrada’s addition strengthens that mission by bringing firsthand operational perspective from inside one of the largest police departments in the United States.
Labrada served 31 years with the LAPD, rising through the ranks from patrol officer to Assistant Chief. Over the course of his career, he held key operational and command assignments across patrol, gang enforcement, and bureau-level leadership. His roles included Captain of Hollenbeck Area, Assistant Commanding Officer of Operations-South Bureau, and Commanding Officer of Operations-Central Bureau, where he oversaw policing operations across a wide range of Los Angeles communities.

During one of the most demanding operational periods in modern city history, Labrada served as Operations Chief during the 2020 civil unrest, coordinating complex deployments and citywide response efforts. As a senior executive, he also helped oversee public safety planning tied to major international events including Super Bowl 56, the FIFA World Cup, and long-range preparations connected to the 2028 Olympic Games.
“Independent investigative journalism only works when it is willing to confront uncomfortable truths and hold power accountable,” said Woods. “Al Labrada’s experience inside the LAPD brings an informed and credible perspective to our reporting. His voice strengthens our ability to examine public safety leadership, policy decisions, and the institutions that shape Los Angeles.”
Before joining law enforcement, Labrada served six years in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Born in Mexico City and raised in El Monte, California, his career reflects a lifetime of public service and leadership in high-stakes environments.
Following his retirement from LAPD in 2024, Labrada founded Assured Resilience Strategies Corp., a security consulting firm focused on risk management, crisis preparedness, and critical infrastructure resilience.
Through his work with The Current Report, Labrada will contribute analysis and commentary on law enforcement leadership, public safety policy, crisis management, and the evolving challenges facing major metropolitan policing.
