What seemed like a media blackout before today’s California primaries turned out to be more of a dark grey in color, as The Local Malibu received a clip showing our website and footage of the raid mentioning the intimidation tactics we firmly believe are the motivation the for D.A. investigating Mayor Pro-Tem Jefferson Wagner for “residing 400 ft. outside the City limits”.
For the last 6 months, rumors have circulated that City Manager Reva Feldman and co-horts were on a mission to prevent Wagner from taking the mayorship in January 2018.
Wagner, who’s campaign platform included cleaning house at City Hall, which included City Manager Feldman, has been the only council member to stay true to the promises he made before winning his seat in the November 2016 election.
On May 29th, Wagner was the only dissenting vote on the City Manager’s contract extension subsequent raise putting her salary higher than the mayor of Los Angeles for a town of only 13,000 residents. Two days later the D.A. presented a warrant to Wagner and raided two properties and his business.
When contacted by The L.A. Times about the investigation, Council Member Rosenthal was quoted as being “shocked”. However, contrary to Rosenthal’s statement, The Local Malibu has learned the investigation has been going on for months, with numerous witnesses interviewed, leading to a dozen officers showing unnecessary force on the morning of the 31st at Wagner’s Latigo Canyon property. Shortly after officers left the property Wagner, told The Local Malibu the raid, which was five hours long with a dozen officers responding was “a waste of the City’s resources”.
The Malibu community couldn’t have agreed more with that statement as residents immediately started showing their support for Wagner on social media, via email and purchasing merchandise from Wagner’s surf shop Zuma Jay’s.
Wagner, a long time, working class, Malibu resident, is in need of financial support for his legal representation in this case. His domestic partner Candace Brown has started a GoFundMe page where the public can donate and write words of encouragement.
