Los Angeles, CA – In a significant development for independent journalism and public accountability, former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, investigative reporter Cece Woods, and independent journalist Nick Shirley convened this week in Los Angeles to align efforts in exposing corruption across California.
The multi-day collaboration brought together a network of whistleblowers, stakeholders, and investigative voices committed to uncovering systemic failures within public institutions. Discussions centered on coordinated investigative strategies, information-sharing, and amplifying firsthand accounts from individuals with direct knowledge of alleged misconduct.
During a private meeting Thursday evening, Sheriff Villanueva and Nick Shirley engaged in an in-depth discussion alongside stakeholders and individuals with direct insight into ongoing corruption across multiple sectors.
Investigative reporter Cece Woods, known for her reporting on public corruption, institutional accountability, and high-profile criminal and civil cases, was initially connected to Shirley through her work exposing retaliation within LAUSD. Woods joined Thursday night’s meeting, further solidifying a collaborative effort rooted in independent investigation.
The collaboration continued Friday in Venice, California, where Woods and Shirley met to focus specifically on the growing concerns surrounding what has been described as the “homeless industrial complex.” Their discussions explored financial networks, policy decisions, and the broader systemic issues tied to homelessness funding and oversight.

After Villanueva left office, incoming Sheriff Robert Luna dismantled the Public Corruption Unit during his first week on the job.
