Al Labrada

Alfred Labrada is a law enforcement and public safety contributor for The Current Report. A United States Marine Corps veteran, he dedicated over 31 years of distinguished service to the Los Angeles Police Department, rising through the ranks from patrol officer to Assistant Chief and Director of the Office of Special Operations. Throughout his career, Labrada held critical leadership roles across the city, commanding Central and South Bureaus and directing the planning, logistics, and field operations for major tactical mobilizations—including the citywide unrest of 2020, Super Bowl LVI in 2022, and countless high-visibility incidents, demonstrations, and special events across Los Angeles.

In the final chapter of his career, Labrada experienced firsthand the realities of institutional and personal betrayal after serving an ex-partner of six years with the termination of their domestic partnership. The fallout exposed deep operational double standards within the department, as internal politics, concealed background secrets, and allegations of prior criminal and misconduct behavior involving the ex-partner were guarded under the administration of former Chief Michel Moore. Drawing from decades of command-level experience, Labrada now writes and speaks candidly on public safety strategy, executive accountability, operational resilience, and the unspoken toll carried by first responders, custody staff, veterans, and their families both on the front lines and behind closed doors.
